Did you know that Xcel energy has strict limits for how much solar you can install? Your system is only allowed to generate 120% of your last 12 months of usage. What does that mean when you buy a home?
You have four options.
1. Go off square footage. This is often much lower than what you'll actually use.
2. Pay for a HERS study which estimates your power usage accurately but costs a couple hundred dollars typically.
3. Wait at least four months and hope that usage can properly predict your full year usage.
4. Install what Xcel will allow and then install the rest when you have enough electrical history to determine your remaining needs.
Our most recent customer chose option 4. We installed 5 kw in December and 4.5 kw in June. These are Solaria panels, which allowed us to produce more power in the available space, while creating a beautiful visual and offering a 25 year workmanship and production warranty. As an added bonus, Solaria is a US based company pushing the envelope of solar technology.
